This poor guy have been chopped down for kerning purposes, so the face is just hanging off the edge, with no shoulder to support it. This sort of thing makes the letters harder to set, because they want to tilt with no flat edge to rest against. The face is stained but it’s not too dark, and it’s splotchy.
